Frequently Asked Questions

When is the housing deadline?

May 1 is the housing application priority deadline. We have a high demand for on-campus housing and encourage students to apply by the May 1 priority deadline.

How can I make changes to my Housing application?
Students may revisit the housing application until April 1 to change their room preferences or request a roommate. Changes to the housing application can be made through the Housing Portal Additional questions can be emailed to housing@fau.edu
How do I select roommates?
New incoming first year students may request one roommate for the academic year 2021-2022. The deadline to request a roommate is April 1. The roommate request and roommate search process is through the academic year housing application. Students may search for roommates based on answers to the Lifestyle questions in the housing application. Or students may request a specific roommate by searching for the students Z# (if you know the student and they shared their Z# with you). Only students who have completed a housing application and made their housing profile searchable may be requested as a roommate. Roommate request notifications are emailed to students FAU Email addresses. Please make sure you check your FAU student email regularly so you do not miss out on roommate requests. Students must accept a roommate request within 14 days to match as a roommate. Roommate request will expire after 14 days. Housing and Residential Education highly discourages students from searching for roommates through social media outlets.

Every effort is made to assign students according to their room preferences. However, preferences are not guaranteed. If your preference is not available the next closest room type will be assigned. Contracts and assignments cannot be cancelled and payment will not be refunded if your preferred room type is not available. Housing placement of matched roommates takes priority over room preferences. Please discuss with your roommate to make sure you both are in agreement to your room preferences. To increase your chances of getting your room preference, apply early.

When will housing assignments be released? How will I know when housing assignments have been released?
Housing assignments are released on a rolling basis starting in early June. Assignments are made based on the date the housing application is received. The housing application opened on December 7. Students who applied early will likely receive their assignment information before students who applied in April. Students must have paid their tuition deposit, completed their immunization requirements and paid the orientation reservation fee to be assigned a housing space. Please complete all of these steps through the Owl Done portal. Housing assignment information is emailed to students FAU email accounts. You will be able to view your roommate and suite-mate information through the housing portal.
What are the requirements to live on campus housing? How do I apply to be a freshman and not live on campus?
Students who live outside of 30 miles are required to live on campus if they are attending the Boca Raton campus.  If you are from outside 30 miles and wish to apply for an exemption to the housing requirement, please complete the exemption form with the required documentation and return to housing@fau.edu.  Students who are accepted to Wilkes Honors College at the FAU Jupiter campus are required to live on-campus for their first two years.  You may request an exemption to the on-campus requirement for Wilkes Honors College and return the completed exemption form and documentation to jupiterhousing@fau.edu.

Exemptions must be received by July 1 for the fall semester and will be reviewed by the Housing Appeals Committee for consideration.

How is summer housing going to work? Move in dates?
The Summer 3 term housing application is available through the Housing portal. Students who are starting for the summer 3 term may apply for summer housing and fall 2021-spring 2022 housing through the Housing Portal. Students who apply for summer 3 term and pay the $100 non-refundable application processing fee will also have the fee carried forward and applied to the fall 2021-spring 2022 application.

Please note that living on-campus for Summer 2021 is optional. However, students who are from outside of 30 miles are required to live on-campus for Fall 2021 and Spring 2022.

Students will schedule Summer 3 term move-in appointments after they receive their summer housing assignment. Summer 3 move-in appointments will be June 23-26. Please wait to make travel plans until you have received your housing assignment and scheduled your move in appointment. Summer first year students are required to move out of housing by August 6.

Fall move in dates are August 17 – 22. Students will schedule their fall move in appointments in July. Please wait to make travel arrangements until you have received your housing assignment and scheduled your move in appointment.

What is the Academic Success Pathway?

The FAU Pathways are opportunities for students to be fully-admitted into FAU while easing into their college careers by enrolling part-time in their first fall semester. This allows for a greater focus on the rigors of college coursework. Students in the Academic Success Pathway will enroll for 9-11 credits in their first fall semester. During this semester, housing is still available for Pathway students, as is Financial Aid at a pro-rated amount. The fall term is the only semester in which part-time status required and students are 100% FAU students. Students were notified in their acceptance letter if they are a part of a Pathway. Find all the details on our pathway programs here.

How do I change my entry term? I’ve been accepted to summer but want to come for Fall.

Admission is term specific based on your academic credentials presented at the time of submission. We are not accepting change of entry terms from summer to fall. However, if you were accepted for the fall term and want to start in the summer, you can complete a change of entry form here.

What is EZ Advising? How/where do I complete my EZ Advising?
  • EZ Advising is an online advising module where you will share your intended major, and all of your past and current academic coursework such as Dual Enrolment or Advanced Placement. Once your EZ Advising is submitted, an academic advisor will be in touch with you to make any changes, and recommend courses needed for your degree. Then you can register for classes. EZ Advising will become available in mid-March and will be completed online through your owldone.fau.edu portal. Class registration is a separate step once the EZ Advising is approved by your advisor. Class registration for summer and fall opens in mid-April.
  • After EZ Advising is complete and approved, what if I have questions? Students can email the advisor who approved their EZ Advising with any questions. Please allow 5-10 business days for the advising to be completed and sent back to the student.
How do I change my major?
  • For admitted students you will request to change your major through OARS. Some majors are restricted, selective and full, such as Nursing and Pre-Architecture. Students cannot request a major change into these programs.
  • Majors in the College of Engineering & Computer Science and the College of Science have some additional requirements to meet for entry as well.
How do I register for Summer Classes/which classes do I take?

Complete EZ Advising (described above). Once the EZ Advising is submitted, an academic advisor will be in touch with you to make any changes and then you can register for classes when registration becomes available. Registration opens in mid-April.

How does it work with my dual enrollment credits? Does that effect my FAU GPA?

You will need to submit your official college transcripts to FAU. Your dual enrollment courses will be calculated into your overall FAU GPA. These transcripts should be sent ASAP after coursework is complete to the FAU Office of Admissions.

I have AP credits, what do I do? How do I get credit for them? What about AICE?
  • You will request to have your AP credits sent to FAU through the College Board website.
  • AICE, IB and other exam credits should also be sent to FAU. Here are the instructions.
How do I apply for scholarships?

The deadline for merit-based scholarship consideration from FAU was January 30th. However, it is important to ensure your FAFSA has been submitted to FAU to ensure you are considered for all additional federal aid you may be eligible to receive. It is not too late to file the FAFSA. If you are entering FAU in the Summer 3 term be sure to complete BOTH the 2020-2021 FAFSA. Students entering FAU in the Fall should complete the 2021-2022 FAFSA. Go to FAFSA.gov. In addition, you can apply for additional scholarship opportunities here.

How will orientation work? What are the dates?

For students entering in the summer term, orientation will be completed in a four-phase (virtual) process. For students entering in the fall term, we are currently planning for in-person programming and recommend the Premium Experience. For more details and dates, click here.

How do I reserve my spot for orientation?

All new incoming students are required to complete orientation. Orientation at FAU is known as SOAR (Student Orientation, Academics & Resources). To reserve your spot (spaces are first come, first serve) login to owldone.fau.edu and follow the reservation form in the SOAR module.

When will the orientation hold be removed?

The orientation hold is automatically lifted within two hours of payment submission.

  • OR hold for incoming freshmen with 29 credits or less post high school
  • OT hold for transfers with 30+ credits post high school
How do I verify that I am a Florida resident?

All students claiming Florida resident status for tuition paying purposes need to work with their parent/guardian to complete the residency affidavit that can be found here: http://www.owlres.fau.edu

How do I finalize my admissions file?
  • All first-year students are required to send official SAT/ACT scores from the testing agency to FAU before classes begin. Most students self-report their scores as a part of the admissions application process – now those scores have to be validated by students sending an official score report. This can be done through act.org or collegeboard.org
  • In addition, all students are required to send official high school transcripts with proof of graduation to FAU before fall classes begin. Usually transcripts have the graduation date on them, so that is necessary proof.
  • Dual Enrollment transcripts from the college that granted the credit also need to be send to the Office of Admissions
  • Any / all credit earned by taking an exam should also be send to the Office of Admissions.
  • Transfer students are required to send transcripts from all institutions attended, with final courses and grades to finalize their file.
How does advising work for transfer students?

Students who are transferring from another institution with an AA degree or over 30 credits will be advised by their department/college. This takes place after admission and submitting the tuition deposit.
